How are the scores calculated?
Every selection you make is included in the total, so if you compare policies on all nine issues, you will be adding nine to the total number of votes. Every vote counts towards that party's total, and we calculate each party's score as a percentage of the total (i.e. total number of votes, divided by the six parties) .
How have you chosen these six parties?
We wanted to include more than the 'main three' parties, but we also had to limit the number of parties so that it wasn't an impossible task to complete the survey. We settled on six as the optimum number of parties we could include. We also wanted the parties to be as broadly relevant as possible, and therefore selected parties who;
- are already represented in the UK or European parliaments
- have the greatest number of candidates standing in the 2010 general election
Sorry to all those parties that this excludes - we'll try do something more sophisticated next time.
Why haven't you included parties from Wales, N.Ireland or Scotland?
Because of the criteria we used to select the six parties (see above) the survey is strongly focused on English parties. Again, we'll try to do something more sophisticated next time, but hope that for now we have made it easier to compare policies for as many people as possible.
How are the policy summaries compiled?
The summaries are taken from the official websites and manifestos of the political parties. There is no editing - except to remove any references to political party names - so that the style of each political party is retained. We display a maximum of eight key points for each issue from each party, and we take them in the order in which they are published. If there are less than eight points we show them all. For a full picture we recommend you continue your own research after completing the survey, starting with the official party websites. You can also refer to our terms & conditions for more details on this.
We've been in contact with all of the political parties included here and are keeping an eye out for changes as the election manifestos are released. Follow us on Twitter and Facebook to stay up to date with these changes.
Is Vote for Policies politically biased?
No! This site is completely non-partisan. This project is completely unfunded (i.e. we're doing it for free), and we don't have any kind of connection with any organisations - political or otherwise.
